How to Make Hair Grow Faster

We’ve all been there. The hairdresser lopped off 5 inches when you clearly said one inch, or maybe your short cut has just lost its freshness. Whatever the reason, we’ve all had times when we wished our hair could grow out with lightning speed. How fast does hair grow? While there are no shortcuts, here are some easy ways to coax your hair to grow a little bit faster.

1Cold Water Rinse

Rinse your strands with cold water at the end of your shower. Cold water doesn’t only have magical properties for your skin, it’s also great for your hair. A cold water rinse will help retain moisture in your hair as well as prevent heat damage. Next time you wash your hair, take a few seconds for this last step for hair that will not only grow faster, but stay healthier longer.

2Keep it Trim

There’s a popular myth that trimming your hair will make it grow faster. This counterintuitive idea is, sadly, not true, but trims can be beneficial for other reasons. Split ends that come about from growing out your hair can effectively ruin the length you’ve achieved by destroying your hair. Regular trims keep your hair healthy and strong and even though you’ll have to sacrifice a little bit of length in the beginning, it’s worth it in the long run.

3Go Au Naturel

Limit your hair’s contact with heat tools like curling irons and blowdryers. Irons can make your ends drier and can break your hair, which can lead to the aforementioned split ends. If you want your hair to grow rapidly, something important to think about is keeping your hair healthy from the roots to the tips. You don’t have to swear off tools completely, but limit them to ones with heat protective coating and never skip out on pre-styling product.

4Scalp Massage

How to make your hair grow longer? Pamper your scalp with a massage! This increases blood circulation on your scalp which in turn helps to stimulate hair follicle growth. You can try massaging your scalp after each shower, rubbing the tips of your fingers around your scalp in circular motions. You can also add essential oils to your massage for added benefits. Peppermint is good for circulation, and lemon oil is supposed to promote healthy hair growth.

5Hair Mask

Masks aren’t just for your face! Give your hair a spa treatment with a homemade mask, you’ll probably have all of these ingredients in your kitchen already. First, beat an egg in a bowl, and then mix in 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt and 1 tablespoon of honey. Apply the concoction to wet hair and leave it on for 20 minutes. Wash it off by shampooing hair as normal. Your hair should look more lustrous and feel sleek and shiny.

6Avoid Wet Brushing

Never brush your hair when it’s wet! Wet hair stretches and breaks far easier than when it’s dry. Your post-shower hair is at its most delicate state and should be treated as such. Brushing your hair while it’s wet can lead to breakage, frizz and damage. If you really need to detangle your hair after washing it, use a wide tooth comb instead of a brush. Comb it by starting at the tips and slowly working your way to the roots instead of from the roots straight down.

7Shampoo Less

In your desire to have perfectly healthy, happy hair, you may have adopted a stricter than normal hygiene regimen. One thing you can skip out on (at least sometimes), is shampooing. Shampooing is harsher than we think for our hair, and washes away protective oil that keep our hair healthy and strong. Don’t shampoo your hair daily, and instead use products like dry shampoo on your off days to keep your look fresh.

8Use Natural Products

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that many of the products we use on our hair come with a lot of chemicals. These can damage your hair or make it dry and brittle. Try to use hair products that are made from natural ingredients, but at the very least avoid the worst ingredients. For shampoos, avoid sulfates as they strip your hair of its natural oils. For conditioners, look out for silicones, because these build up in your hair over time. For styling products like hairsprays, keep away from alcohols, as they dry out your strands.

9Hair Growth Products: Eat Biotin

What goes inside your body affects how it looks outside, and hair is no different. If you want healthy hair you need to also take care of your body. Biotin is a B vitamin that is essential for hair growth. Biotin can be naturally found in meat, salmon, eggs, nut and avocados. Vegetarians and vegans might have a hard time naturally getting recommended allowances of this B vitamin, in which case, they can take a Biotin supplement.

10No Towel Turbans

By now, it probably feels like second nature to wrap up your wet hair in a towel post-shower. Though it’s an easy way to dry your hair while keeping it out of your face, you should start skipping this ritual if you want long, healthy locks faster. Wet hair is very fragile and wrapping it in a towel can lead to breakage. Instead, try drying your hair by patting it gently with a towel. Also, consider getting a different type of towel for your hair because normal terry isn’t the greatest. Microfiber towels are much gentler on the hair!

11Exfoliate Your Scalp or Natural Hair Growth

A healthy scalp leads to healthy hair.  Exfoliating your skin is a no brainer, but turns out your scalp needs some exfoliating TLC too! An easy way to exfoliate your scalp is by adding a few spoonfuls of sugar to your shampoo. Rub this mixture using your fingertips (but not your nails!) on your scalp to help get rid of dead skin cells.

12Get a Silk Pillowcase

Want another way to know how to grow your hair faster? It may seem like an unnecessary luxury, but regular cotton pillowcases may cause your hair to fall out because of their relatively rough surfaces. Pillowcases made out of material like silk or satin will be much gentler on your hair, preventing breakage and hair loss. And if you want your hair to grow out quickly, you probably don’t want to be pulling out more strands than necessary! Silk pillowcases also have benefits for your skin!
