Best Ways to Text Your Crush
Texting can be pretty awkward, period. Regardless of who you’re chatting with, there are bound to be lulls in conversation or messages that get left on a read receipt for far too long. Now, double that with the pressure that comes with texting the cutie you’ve had your eye on all year long, and it seems almost impossible to get a conversation off the ground. The good news is, it’s a lot easier than you thought. Every relationship has to start somewhere, and the answer to winning over your crush has been literally right in your hands all along.
1Play would you rathers.
These fun simple, little questions can actually make for super fun games to play via text message. The best thing about would you rathers is that they can start out being funny and light hearted, and end up making for really deep, meaningful conversation. Plus, it’s a great way to get to know someone, without making it feel like you are trying really hard to ask the big questions.
A few suggestions: Would you rather have to spend every day of your life in math class or in detention? Would you rather live in one place you loved, or travel everywhere?
2Give them a compliment.
Point out something you noticed, appreciated, or admired about your crush that day. Maybe it was something they did or said in class, maybe they just so happened to be wearing an amaaazing pair of shoes. Regardless of how big or how small the compliment is, you should let your crush know! With a compliment, who doesn’t like to hear something nice. It’s an easy way to make their day, and also make a conversation come to life in an instant!
A few suggestions: Hey! You did such an amazing job in the game today – it was so fun to watch! I’m literally still cracking up at that joke you told at lunch, you’re hilarious!
3Ask them about what they like.
People are the most talkative when they get going on a topic that they’re passionate about. If you’ve started to notice the kinds of things your crush is into, take the chance and ask them about it! There’s a good chance that they’ll be happy to share even a little bit of background info on what they love with someone else. If you’re having trouble thinking of a way to pose it so that the compliment doesn’t sound too forced, try posing it as an observation.
A few suggestions: I noticed that you literally have the best band tees. Do you go to a lot of shows?
4Tell A joke.
Everyone loves a good laugh and appreciates people that can find a way to put a smile on their faces. With all the gifs, memes, and hilarious things happening around the internet, inspiration for funny jokes to share is everywhere. Plus, whatever you choose to send can help showcase your own sense of humor, which is one of the best things a person can have and is something that a lot of people look for in relationships. If you can win them over with LOLs, you’re probably in good shape to win them over, period! If you’re feeling nervous, just think of your crush’s face when they read it and imagine how cute they’ll look laughing.
5Ask for help.
Even if you’re asking about something small, the gesture speaks volumes. This lets your crush know that you trust their advice or guidance and view them as someone who is actually useful to you, and as someone you want to be there. The good news is if you’re in the same class or in the sme group for a project, the easiest way to go about asking for help is to ask about the homework or an upcoming quiz. If you’re bold, why not go for setting up a study date. Of course, you don’t have to call it a date upfront (unless you’re feeling flirty AF), but it’s one of the easiest ways to set up some time to actually hang IRL.
6Talk about your common interests.
Sometimes, it may not be totally obvious from the start what you and your crush have in common. It may take a while to figure out, but by being observant and paying attention to the things they wear or talk about, you may be able to gather a pretty good idea. If you aren’t really finding out a TON about them, there is always the option to take a little scroll through their social media pages. No one really wants to admit it, but everyone does a little “stalking” every once and while because everyone knows that you can learn so much about a person based on what they post! The only catch is you have to avoid making it obvious that you stalked them to find out some of the intel you’ve gotten on their interests. Just be sure not to like a photo from like a thousand years ago. There’s almost nothing more embarrassing.
7Slide into their DMs.
One way to cut through the awkwardness of what would be considered stalking is to slide right into your crush’s direct messages. It’s so easy to base a conversation off of exactly what they posted, but allows you to keep a conversation going in a chat-like format. Plus, sliding into the DMs also has a notorious connotation of being a prime way of showing someone that you’re into them, or at the very least, think they’re cute.
8Send them a meme.
Memes are the Instagram gift that keeps on giving. They’re hilarious and literally beg to be shared. So, resist the urge to tag your squad in the next meme that gets you laughing. Instead, go out on a limb and tag your crush. If they don’t comment back or acknowledge the meme, you can always follow up with a lighthearted text like “OMG did you see that meme I tagged you in??”. Now, you’ve got convos going on in not one but TWO places. Not too shabby when it comes to quickly connecting with a crush.
9Comment on their Instagram.
Half of the reason people post anything on social media is for the likes and comments. We all know this. That also means that the next time your crush posts a super cute selfie or a pic where they look incredibly hot, it’s totally fair game to hit them up with a comment that lets them know how you really feel. If it feels too aggressive to post “YOU’RE SO HOT” (which is honestly what you’re thinking, let’s be real), then opt for a series of fire emojis. That’ll definitely still get your message across and they’ll know exactly what you mean.
10Send them a picture
We all know that sending pictures back and forth has somewhat of a risqué connotation, but that’s definitely not what we mean here. I’m talking sending your crush a photo of something you think will get a convo going. One of the sweetest gestures is to send them a picture that reminds you of that person. Maybe it’s a place that the two of you have been that holds a lot of memories, maybe it’s a photo that relates to an inside joke, but either way, it’s a quick way to let them know that you were thinking about them in a special moment. A picture’s worth a thousand words right?
A classic move is to send nothing but emojis. You can be coy and flirty, without even having to figure out the words to do so. Have them decode a question using only emojis. It gets a game going where you have to figure out what they other person means and is almost like establishing your own secret language that only the two of you speak. At least for maybe a few texts back and forth. It’s funny and different, but obviously, you can’t base a whole relationship on sentences made up on emojis.
Even better than sending emojis is sending bitmojis. Instead of asking for help on your homework in the straightforward way, you can almost literally bring your conversation to life using one of the (what feels like) hundreds of bitmojis looking stressed or lost. Don’t have anything else to say but “hey”? Why not say it with a bitmoji waving?
13Snapchat with them
Since literally everyone (and their moms, and grandmas..) are now on Snapchat, chances are that a quick snap to your crush could totally help get a convo started. It gives you the perfect opportunity to show off a little with each and every selfie, and also be fun and silly with all of the other crazy filters and features. Plus, since you can chat on Snapchat, it’s so easy to go from sending pics back and forth, to actually chatting in a fun, quick way. Plus, once you get a snapstreak going, you’ve got a guaranteed way to see your crush every single day. BUT, if you’re anything like me, you know that the suspense of waiting to see if your crush has opened your snap is killer.
